Delicious Dance Day & Week Resource Digest, leaving on a jet plane, teaching & publishing adjustments for upcoming travel

Published 11 days ago • 3 min read

Hello beautiful,

Dance Week is finally here! This week's article below is a resource roundup is to relish a couple of important annual celebrations of dance movement and it's cool to see other creators in the dance space sharing their works as well.

National Dance Week, an annual celebration of dance that takes place from April 19 to 28 this year, is specially set aside to spread the delight and joys of dancing and to create awareness about its impact and benefits. April 29th is International Dance Day, chosen in 1982 by the Dance Committee of ITI due to the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern ballet. "The intention of the International Dance Day Message is to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form, cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language."

This year I am participating in these festivals of movement by dancing live & online and sharing valuable resources on the topic of dance from myself and other splendid creators. One contribution was my latest micro video choreo for the Alphabet Superset and we had Online and In-Studio Ballet classes this week, but will take a break next week as I travel to California to visit family. Online Ballet & Yoga will resume for two weeks while I am in Hawai'i, then I will be traveling back to Germany.

During my absence from Cologne I have found substitute teachers for all of my classes and I will be reachable albeit from a different location on the Earth for the next few weeks, but there will be a reduction in publishing my usual content such as email newsletters, blog articles, videos, etc. due to prioritizing inputs such as seeing family, sights, and making memories.

Thanks for your understanding and I look forward to seeing what the new perspective brings, may you also have a brilliant May!

My creations, recommendations, and questions for you are:

Viewing:

  • Previous videos, performances, and choreographies I've created while compiling my Dancey Digest, linked in the article above
  • We're working hard to get ready for the trip, so not too much viewing except background and in-between diversions such as the silliness of "What We Do in the Shadows"
  • In case you missed it, I busted out the old pointe shoes in my #alphabetsupersetchallenge “V” micro video choreo, with W-Z still to come...
  • I'm so excited to see West Hawai'i Dance Theatre's production of “Giselle” at Kahilu Theatre on May 18th!

Listening:

Reading:

  • Finished The True Love Experiment by Christina Lauren a very entertaining rom-com and also synchronistically set in San Diego, where I will be visiting next week!
  • Started Airplane Mode, a fascinating nonfiction history of travel and also apt for my current mood

Practicing:

Practicing Together LIVE this week:

  • In-Studio Adult Beginner Ballet, 6-7:00pm CET Mondays, Tanzschule Tanzraum Nippes, Cologne, creates a strong, body-friendly, and graceful foundation for dance will continue without me in my absence (except for holidays), then I'll return in late May (German)
  • Online Yogalicious Gentle Yoga 7-8:00pm CET Tuesdays takes a break next week April 30th and returns May 7th (7:00am HI) is a delicious mindful movement feast which balances strength, balance and coordination, mind body and spirit (English)
  • In-Studio Barre a Terre / Strength & Stretch for all dancers at 6-7:00pm CET Thursdays, Tanzschule Tanzraum Nippes, Cologne, Germany is an hour of floor-based feel-good functional conditioning for all dancers and like Beginner Ballet will be taught by a substitute teacher while I'm away (German)
  • Online Balletlicious Gentle Adaptive Ballet Barre+ 8-9:00am CET Fridays is on break next week May 3rd and then back to it's usual time the following week, with mostly barre with a little dancey centre building a strong, body-friendly, and graceful foundation for dance at home or anywhere in the world.(English)

Inquiring:

  • How will you get dancey for Dance Week & Day?
  • What kind of dance (or art) would you like to create?
  • How do you adapt movement to different dancers, places, and situations?
  • Who are your favorite dancers, companies, and creators to follow?
  • What creative challenges are you currently facing?

Let me know what is up in your world by replying to this email or on social media for those who use it.

Glad to be in community with you and wishing you a very special spring!

Love, Blythe

Hello beautiful, Happy end of Ramadan to those who celebrate, and solar eclipse to those who enjoyed the phenomena! Yoga Teacher Susanna Barkataki shared: “From a Vedic POV, eclipses are a time for reflection, introspection, changing directions. Where things eclipse or block the light we can experience challenges. And these blocks or challenges can be the very thing we need to grow into our fullest potential.” It might be hard to face at the time, but absolutely rings true in my life that...

Hello beautiful, Happy Spring (in the northern hemisphere, Fall in the southern)! I can't believe the Vernal Equinox has passed, but am doing my best to relish this splendid time of year in this location! Creating my "T" micro video choreo, I had Tahitian dance (popular in Hawai'i, my home), Top Rocks (breakdancing fun), and Tango (a new technique I'm learning!) on my mind, but wound up going with some favorite ballet steps at Tanzschule Tanzraum, one of the locations where I teach live...
